April 22, 2008

The April 22, 2008 meeting of the Florence County Citizens in Action was held at 6:00 p.m. at Florence Bible Chapel with 22 members and guests present.

 Chairman Licia Stone opened the meeting.

 Murray Jordan led Pledge of Allegiance. .

 Brenda Gibson read minutes from March meeting.

 Miriam Dew gave the Treasurer Report.

Lou Vause gave update on petition drive.  She has delivered to Clerk to Council signed petitions on

March 20, 2008.  Jack Nettles said copies are in the safe at court house.  .

Walt Ranson has assisted in updating Florence Citizen in Action web site.  Comments can be made on web site.

Walt Ranson commented on the refinancing of county local bonds at a lower percentage but they also added $4.5 million for future projects

Two committees were formed: 

(1)    Nominating Committee consist of:  Lou Vause (Chairman),

        Jim Huggins and Jerry Pierce.

(2)    Letter Writing Committee:  These members will write letters to all local newspaper editors and post on our blog.

 Licia Stone introduced guest speakers County Councilman Dr. Morris Anderson and Herbie Christmas from Florence County Environmental services.  Dr. Anderson gave an emotional tribute to animal love and Herbie Christmas gave a slide presentation on the disarray state of the current facility and the bright outlook of the future County Pound at the Effingham facility.  Mr. Christmas stated that 90% to 94% of animals at the county pound are euthanized.

 Next County Council meeting will be May 1, 2008 and May 15, 2008 at 9:00 o’clock at the Florence City-County Complex.  Attendance is encouraged.

 Our next meeting will be held at Florence Bible Chapel on May 27, 2008 at 6:00 with guest speaker County Councilman Ken Ard concerning the Ad Hoc Water Committee

March 25th, 2008: 

I. Vice Chairman, Lou Vause opened the meeting and welcomed
members, new members, and guest.

II. Pledge of Allegiance was lead by Walt Ranson.

III. The minutes of the previous meeting were read by Lou Vasue

 

IV. There was no Treasure’s report.

 

 

V. Petition Drive Report was made by Lou Vause who told the group
that the petitions have been numbered, will be copied and will be taken to  Election Commission to be certified. We will then take necessary steps
to present them   to County Council county  

 

 

VI. Dates of upcoming Council meetings (April 4 & 18) were
announced by Mrs. Vause and she encouraged CIA members  to attend.

 

 

VII. Mrs. Vause introduced the speaker, Mr. James Brogdon, the
senior vice president and general counsel of Santee Cooper. who gave an
informative presentation on the proposed coal-fired power plant to be built in
Kingsburg.

February 25, 2008 meeting of the Florence County Citizens in Action was held at
6:00 p.m. at Florence Bible Chapel with 19 members and 11 guests present.

Lou Vause gave update on petition drive.  We are now
over our required amount by 2000 signatures.

 

As of 12-21-07 there was $3,764,591 in discretionary
Fund.

 

Mike King,
Peggy Brown and Terri Cook from Pee Dee River Watches (which are concerned
citizens making everyone aware of environmental pollution) gave an overview of
the impact a new coal-fired power plant proposed by Santee Cooper in the
Pamplico area would have on the environment.

 

Next
County Council meeting will be March 6, 2008 and March 20, 2008 at 9:00 o’clock
at the Florence City-County Complex.  Attendance is encouraged.

 

Our next meeting will be held at Florence Bible Chapel
on March 25, 2008 at 6:00 with guest speaker Mark Pilgrim from Santee Cooper on
the Economic Advantages of the Coal Plant at Pamplico.

 

Our April 22, 2008 meeting’s guest speaker will be Dr.
Morris Anderson on the new Florence County Animal Shelter.

Lou Vause gave update on petition drive. To date we have 10,527 signatures

Jody Lynch for the Florence County Sheriff’s Dept gave an enlightening presentation on gang activity in Florence County.

Larry Smith, Publisher of Community Times Newspaper was present at our January meeting and has requested assistance in forming a watchdog group for Florence City Council.

Next County Council meeting will be February 7, 2008 and February 21, 2008 at 9:00 o’clock at the Florence City-County Complex. Attendance is encouraged.

Our next meeting will be held at Florence Bible Chapel on February 26, 2008 at 6:00 with guest speaker Mike King informing us of the Environmental Impact of the Coal Plant at Pamplico.

Our March 25, 2008 meeting’s guest speaker will be Mark Pilgrim from Santee Cooper on the Economic Advantages of the Coal Plant.

November 27, 2007:

 

The November 27, 2007 meeting of the Florence County Citizens in Action was held at 6:00 p.m. at Florence Bible Chapel with 17 members present.

Chairman Licia Stone opened the meeting.

Dean Fowler led Pledge of Allegiance. .

Lou Vause gave update on petition drive.

Mike Young, Florence County Elections Director, was our guest speaker. Mr. Young give us an update of upcoming elections for 2008.

Next County Council meeting will be December 7, 2007. Attendance is encouraged.

Our next meeting will be held at Shoney’s Restaurant at Magnolia Mall 6:00 p.m.

Florence County Sheriff’s Department will give a presentation on gangs in Florence County.

October 16, 2007:

The October 16, 2007 meeting of the Florence County Citizens in Action was held at 6:30 p.m. at ESAB Recreation Center with 38 members and guest present. A delicious complementary dinner was enjoyed by all.

Chairman Licia Stone opened the meeting at 6:30 p.m.

Dean Fowler led Pledge of Allegiance.

Bill Hoge, Director of Planning of Florence County, gave a very informative talk on Storm Water Drainage.

Miriam Dew gave treasurer report.

Advertising for the FCCIA was discussed and voluntary donations were taken.
Possible advertising newspaper; “SHE” magazine; “VIEW” magazine, TV 10 community calendar, and/or billboards.

Lou Vause gave update on petition drive. Need volunteers are needed for Pecan Festival and courthouse.

FCCIA blog was discussed.

Next County Council meeting will be October 18, 2007. Attendance is encouraged.

Our next meeting will be held at Florence Bible Chapel corner of 2nd Loop Road and Woods Drive at 6:00 p.m. Mike Young, Elections Director, will be our guest speaker.

September 20, 2007:

The September 20, 2007 meeting of the Florence County Citizens In Action was held at Jakie’s Restaurant with about 35 people in attendance. Chairman, Licia Stone opened the meeting. Walt Ranson led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance.

In the absence of the treasurer there was no treasurer’s report. In the absence of the secretary there was no secretary’s report.

Chairman Stone introduced the guest speaker, Sherriff Kenny Boone. Sheriff Boone assisted by several deputies presented an informative program concerning the fight against drugs in Florence County which included a video of “Operation Strike Force”

After the program , the annual Open Government award was presented to Lou Vause for her outstanding contribution to open government in Florence County.

Co-chairman of the petition drive, Lou Vause reported on the collecting of signatures to reduce the Road Maintenance Fee.. Great progress is being made and the 11,000 required signatures should be obtained around the first of the year. Mrs. Vause asked for volunteers to assist in this effort. Copies of the petition will be distributed to members at the October meeting.

There was a discussion of the 27% and 42 % salary raises county council granted to themselves without disclosing this information at a public meeting. Mrs. Stone thanked the members who attended the pres conference concerning this matter.

Mrs. Stone announced the recent deaths of two FCCIA members, Charlie Powers and W. H. Montrose. She said both members had made significant contributions to the community.

Mrs. Stone announced that FCCIA member Bill Sebnick was appointed to the Lake City Council. Mr. Sebnick is a former mayor of Lake City.

Mrs. Stone thanked the phone committee and asked for additional volunteers for this committee.

Walt Ranson reported on the new blog FlorenceCIA.com.

The October 16 meeting of FCCIA which will be a chicken bog at the ESSAB Cabin was announced. Mrs. Stone announced a board and planning meeting to be held October 9 at 5:00 at Atlanta Bread.
